Preparing for
War
T
hings are about to get extremely competitive in the mobile computing space. PC sales fell 14
percent last year; the worst figure on record, according to a recent IDC report. On the other hand,
analysts are all quite certain that tablet and smartphone sales will grow by hundreds of millions
of units over the next few years. By 2017, smartphones and tablets will outsell PCs by six times,
according to Gartner research. The US$ 68 billion portable device market will grow to $90 billion in four
years, while the PC market will also grow, but only from $51 billion to $56 billion.
As of today, Qualcomm and Samsung have climbed into the second and third spots respectively in terms
of market share, pushing AMD down from second to fourth place. Intel still occupies the top slot; its
market share has reduced slightly, though at 65.3 percent compared to Qualcomm’s 9.4 percent, Intel is
in no danger of being overtaken just yet. Qualcomm seems to be going from strength to strength—its
Snapdragon processors are found in most of today’s flagship phones and hundreds of other popular
devices. Meanwhile, Intel’s successes in the notebook, desktop and server spaces have been somewhat
overshadowed by the overall lack of demand for new products in those markets.
Intel has every reason to be worried about the way things are going, and this past month we had the
chance to see how it plans to respond. It certainly isn’t taking things easy. The company’s efforts at making
processors for mobile devices have not exactly brought about any revolutions so far, but a new generation
of low-power Atom processors launching this year, codenamed Silvermont, will be a huge test of its ability
to adapt to the new world. The Atom line was conceived with netbooks and entry-level desktop
PCs in mind, but tablets and phones don’t have the luxury of large bodies with vents and fans.
Silvermont sheds a lot of old-fashioned design choices to make way for some all-new thinking.
Silvermont’s biggest attraction is the way it can quickly ramp its speed and power
consumption up and down to deal with whatever the user is doing at the moment, saving
battery life and reducing heat generation without any noticeable stuttering. Intel has the
resources to pull off extremely complex chip designs and overhaul its architecture and
manufacturing processes at the nanometer scale. At the time of the unveiling, Intel had some
fighting words directed at its competition: “We’re breaking the myth that ARM can do things
that Intel cannot” proclaimed Dadi Perlmutter, one of Intel’s seniormost technologists.
Just a day later, Qualcomm had a few things to say for itself. Without explicitly
naming anyone, senior vice president Anand Chandrasekher used a fairly
pointed analogy involving cyclist Lance Armstrong attempting to run a
marathon and losing quite badly to suggest that those who are good at one
type of sport shouldn’t try to compete in another. He also declared that
research and development investments will naturally migrate to streams
that promise high returns—smartphones and tablets, not PCs. Qualcomm
also clearly sees how foolish it would be to rest on its laurels.
Ultimately, device manufacturers will have to be convinced that
products built around either company's chips will be successful. We’ll
know how well they've worked when actual products are announced. It’s
a time of change, nothing is certain, and everyone’s claws are out. The
Christmas shopping season this year should be very interesting indeed.
